October 14, 2015AUGUSTA, Maine — A Maine lawmaker is working on a bill that would let convicted drunken drivers keep their driver’s licenses if they submit to alcohol screenings twice a day.

WMTW-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1LObOAe ) state Rep. Patty Hymanson, of York, says the bill will mirror a similar program in South Dakota.

Offenders would pay for the costs of the daily testing under Hymanson’s proposal. Police officers and sheriff’s deputies would have to administer the tests.

Executive director of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association Bob Schwartz called the proposals “ludicrous,” saying that there are not enough police officers available to perform those services.

The legislative council plans to meet next Thursday to decide whether the proposal would move forward.
