As per a new survey, the Kenyans are reducing the consumption of alcohol after a successful anti-drinking campaign.

The report which is conducted after five years by the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) found that the national average of prevalence rate stood at 12.2 per cent while the prevalence rates of other regions are as follows:

  • Nairobi: 17.5 per cent
  • Eastern region: 14.3 per cent
  • Western region: 13.4 per cent
  • Rift Valley 13.2 per cent
  • Central Kenya: 10.6 per cent
  • Nyanza: 10.2 per cent
  • North Eastern region: 2.0 per cent

The survey was targeted among Kenyans between age 15 and age 65 across the country. The best results of the anti-drinking campaign reflected in the Central region according to the agency.

“There has been an aggressive campaign against alcohol abuse in the last decade compared to other regions. Since the focus has only been in Central, there is a shift to other regions,” Morris Kamenderi, principal research officer at NACADA told Business Daily.

However, there has also been a sharp rise in the number of licenced bars in the country. According to state agencies, the main region of high alcohol abuse in the Nairobi region is the high population of government employees who have a high disposable income.

Almost 5000 Kenyans are losing their lives due to alcoholism, opines the Interior Ministry of the country.
