A Brisbane pharmacist and doctor has developed a product she believes can cure hangovers.

Dr Brooke Mai-Whelan says her product, called Recoverthol, can help the body process alcohol more efficiently and thus do away with the nasty after-effects of excess consumption.

A box of Recoverthol contains four doses with each dose coming in the form of a small capsule of liquid about the size of a teaspoon.

‘You squeeze the contents into your glass,’ Dr Mai-Whelan said.

‘It will not change the taste but it will certainly make you wake up feeling better tomorrow morning.’

However others are wary of the product, with Jim Finn of the Australian Medical Association Queensland telling 9News that, ‘You may just be suppressing the symptoms and not suppressing the damage the alcohol is doing to your body.’

Alcohol is metabolised in the liver by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, which employs secondary compounds to perform the reaction.

Rocoverthol provides the body with a boost of these compounds so that the liver can process larger amounts of alcohol than it normally could.

Dr Mai-Whelan, who lectures at the University of Queensland and also has a smartphone app relating to alcohol consumption, claims that Recoverthol works in 9 out of 10 people and that she wants to start a ‘smart drinking revolution.’
