Nearly one in four British women are completely teetotal compared to just 14 per cent of the nation’s men.
And millions of others are trying to cut down on the amount of booze they consume, according to industry figures which show the UK is losing its lager lout image.
Women are leading the way with 23 per cent of adult females now admitting they do not touch a drop, said the study for trade journal The Grocer.
While men are not as likely to be completely teetotal, those that do drink are more likely to be making an effort to drink less, said the poll of 2,000 adults.
It suggests the government’s health campaigns to reduce alcohol consumption is finally getting through, said The Grocer’s report, particularly among older Brits.
