NH: Liquor enforcement works with speedway on underage drinking

The New Hampshire Liquor Commission is working with New Hampshire Motor Speedway to prevent underage alcohol consumption at this weekend’s NASCAR races.
Enforcement officers have trained track security on how to recognize false identification and reviewed with them state laws related to underage drinking and adults who provide alcohol to minors. On Saturday and Sunday, enforcement officials will attend staff briefings at the speedway to answer any additional questions, and will be patrolling the track for violations.
Minors in possession of alcohol are subject to a mandatory $300 fine, and adults who provide alcohol can be charged with misdemeanors punishable by up to a year in jail.
About 46,000 underage individuals drink each year in New Hampshire, according to a report funded by the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. That behavior cost the state’s residents about $163,900 in 2013, mostly due to youth violence and traffic crashes, the report estimated.
Mark Furlone, the speedway’s director of security and a former state police officer, said the track is asking parents and all adults to take an active role in assisting with the effort.
“We strongly support this initiative for the safety of our guests and for the well-being of minors,” he said.
