CANADA – The annual Red Ribbon campaign kicked off Friday in conjunction with police launching their Festive RIDE program.
The red ribbon is a visible symbol to “remind us of the thousands of Canadians who have lost their lives or have been injured due to alcohol- and drug-related crashes,” said Ron Roy, chair of Action Sudbury, in a release.
“Secondly, it is a reminder to people to drive sober through the holidays and throughout the year.”
Over the course of December, residents are encouraged to display the ribbons on their vehicles as part of the Tie-One-On campaign, which urges others to drive aware and not impaired.
Due to the COVID-19 virus, most of the messaging from Action Sudbury this year will be through public service announcements and electronic billboards.
The organization is advising Sudburians to:
– Find a designated driver from your social bubble;
– Ensure your guests get home safely if you are hosting an event where alcohol will be served; and
– Have a plan B to get home yourself if you are out drinking, as Safe Ride Home Sudbury will not be operating this year and taxi services could be overwhelmed.
Action Sudbury kicked off the Red Ribbon Campaign by sponsoring a RIDE check initiative on the weekend.
The organization also thanked its sponsors and patrons, in particular Delta Bingo.
