As Memorial Day approaches and kicks off the unofficial start of summer, it is crucial to be vigilant, safe, and respectful of the laws on the nation’s roadways. Through mission-driven efforts to prevent drunk driving and promote road safety this summer, Responsibility.org launched its summer campaign to remind adults to “get there responsibly” through public awareness and social media engagement regarding transportation alternatives to driving drunk, collaboration with law enforcement and policymakers, and education on tools to prevent drunk and impaired driving.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 12,429 people were killed in drunk driving crashes involving a driver with an illegal BAC (.08 or greater) in 2023, including 3,832 drunk driving fatalities that occurred during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
“Summer brings more people on the road for both long road trips and short everyday travels. These drivers should not have to share the road with someone who has no business being behind the wheel of a car after making the decision to drive drunk or impaired,” said Responsibility.org Executive Director Leslie Kimball. “Most people who choose to drink do so responsibly and don’t drive drunk. I implore everyone to make a plan to enjoy alcohol beverages mindfully if and when they choose to drink and plan for a safe ride home for themselves and those in their parties. Drunk driving is 100% preventable and we all share the responsibility to make smart choices.”
Responsibility.org is committed to encouraging responsible decision-making around alcohol and continuing efforts to eliminate drunk driving during the summer months and beyond. Some tactics that encourage people to “get there responsibly” include:
- Responsibility.org’s Virtual Bar app to show how alcohol can affect BAC depending on height, weight, food and water intake, and other factors
- Reminders to budget for and schedule a ride share in advance, plan to take public transportation, or appoint a designated driver before events and gatherings
- Social media toolkit for companies and individuals to use to remind others to get there responsibly
- Virtual sessions to learn more about the catalysts of drunk driving, the state of drunk and impaired driving in our country, and legislation and emerging technology being implemented to make roads safer
- High-visibility PSAs in Washington, DC with get there responsibly messaging
“Eliminating drunk driving takes all of us,” Kimball said. “When we come together and put these tools into action – whether it’s planning a safe ride home, talking to our friends, or making informed choices – we ensure that no matter our destination, we all get there responsibly.”
