Supermarkets are controversially set to refuse to hand over drink upon delivery if customers look drunk during the Covid lockdown.
Retailers and delivery firms – including some of the country’s biggest like Uber Eats – are committing to stopping giving booze to drunk customers.
Britain’s six biggest supermarkets are supporting the new venture, including the likes of Tesco, Britain’s biggest grocer, as well as the rest of the so called Big Four.
The new scheme is backed by Uber Eats and the big six supermarkets and is operated by International Alliance for Responsible Drinking, which includes drinks firms Diageo and Heineken – and the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group.
During Covid lockdown, supermarkets are staying open after being deemed essential by the government, with shoppers allowed to visit to buy essential items like food, drink and medicine.
But many others are relying on doorstep deliveries from a range of retailers and grocers – with extra delivery slots rolled out by some companies to cope with the increased demand and pressure being placed on some of the UK’s largest chains.
Those deliveries will not be exempt from the new rules, however.
