Leading trade bodies have partnered to produce resources for hospitality venues after a reported rise in drink spiking.

The trade bodies that have united include: UK Hospitality, the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), and Hospitality Ulster.

With a reported rise in drink spiking in the UK recently, the groups have joined to produce a factsheet of resources for hospitality operators. The resources include posters, training for staff, advice, guidance, and a film, and are intended to help combat drink spiking and protect customers.

The groups commented: “Drink spiking is a despicable crime and cannot be tolerated. Everyone has a right to feel safe during a night out, which is why as a sector we work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment.

“Although the number of drink-spiking reports remain low, any such incidents underline the need to protect the welfare and maintain the safety of customers. It is why we continue to collaborate with the police and other local stakeholders to ensure everyone can enjoy a fun night out.”

The trade bodies recommend a three-step plan if a customer has had their drink spiked in a venue.

The steps include: acting on the report, by activating the venue’s safeguarding procedures, as well as attempting to identify suspects; ensuring the health and safety of the affected customer, by calling emergency services and providing supervision; and to log and record the incident for emergency services.

According to the trade bodies, some venues have begun to offer anti-spiking bottle stoppers and protective drink covers, while some local authorities and police forces are providing drug-testing kits.

The groups also emphasised the importance of well-trained staff to handle cases, as well as customer search procedures, and the installation of CCTV and metal detectors.
