VA:  Virginia ABC, Piedmont Virginia Community College to Offer Distillery Start-up Class

News Release

Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control

June 8, 2016

RICHMOND – With the popularity of craft distilled spirits showing no signs of slowing down, the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is once again teaming up with Piedmont Virginia Community College Workforce Services in Charlottesville to offer a distillery start-up class. The class is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, at the school’s Stultz Center for Business and Career Development, 501 College Drive. Participants will learn the complete process of becoming distillers. Beginning with the application process, the class will cover all Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and Virginia ABC requirements. Also included will be steps to obtaining federal label approval, record-keeping requirements, how to get products approved for sale in Virginia ABC stores, as well as the requirements for operating an on-site distillery store and tastings.

Participants will receive a resource notebook for continued guidance should they decide to pursue distiller’s licensing.

Representatives from the TTB and Virginia ABC will teach the class.

“We were very pleased with the level of participation in the first distillery start-up class held last fall and are excited to be able to once again team up with the community college and the TTB to support a start-up effort,” said Virginia ABC Chairman Jeffrey Painter. “The collaboration will benefit Virginia’s burgeoning distilled spirits industry.”

This is the second year Virginia ABC has partnered with the school and the TTB to offer a distillery start-up class. Last fall, 30 people signed up to take the distillery start-up class. Registration is $49. To register and for more information, visit the school’s website at http://goo.gl/qGPnEr.
